Michael L. Brownstein, M.D., FACS

Dr.Michael L.Brownstein is a Board Certified plastic surgeon, and a member of ASPS, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, specializing in plastic, reconstructive, and gender related surgery. He has performed gender related surgery since the late 1970'swhen, with the advice and support of Paul Walker, co-founder and former President of the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association, now WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health), he received the first of his many referrals for bilateral chest reconstruction.

Dr. Brownstein has been performing female to male chest reconstructive procedures for almost 30 years and his practice is exclusively limited to this surgery. He performs approximately 200 of these procedures annually.

Announcement! Dr. Brownstein will be attending the Gender Odyssey Conference in Seattle, Washington August 1-4, 2013 with Dr. Curtis Crane. He, Dr. Brownstein, looks forward to seeing colleagues, friends, and former patients, and assisting Dr. Crane with his presentation.

Announcement! I am taking this opportunity, in June, 2012, to advise all that I plan to retire from my surgery practice on 31 December 2012, after 35 years of serving the transgender and gender non conforming communities. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to provide quality surgical services to so many individuals over the years and grateful also for the many friendships and contacts I have made over the course of almost 4 decades. I wish to thank my colleagues and, especially, my patients for their loyalty, understanding, and for the knowledge I have acquired from them. And a special thanks also to my wife, Denise, and to those others who have served on my office staff over the years for their dedication, advice, and invaluable assistance.

It is my desire to have this practice continue to serve these communities, and in that regard I have asked Dr. Curtis Crane to assume my practice and office under the name, "Brownstein-Crane Surgical Services", beginning 1 January 2013. I have selected Dr. Crane to take over because of his extensive surgical training and expertise, and his dedication to the transgender and gender non conforming communities. He will continue to provide gender related surgical services, in San Francisco, to this population of patients. He will expand the scope of the practice by, in additon to performing top surgery, performing gender confirmation bottom procedures, for which he has been especially trained. Dr. Crane is qualified in both urology and plastic surgery and has trained in the US, Serbia, Belgium, and Thailand. He has over 10 years of training experience in this field. I will remain with him throughout January, 2013 to work with him in the operating room, to teach him my particular techniques for top surgery, and to introduce him to the community. Dr. Crane will also be accepting patients for general plastic surgery procedures including liposuction, augmentation mammaplasty, reduction mammaplasty, and other cosmetic and reconstructive operations.

I am proud to have Dr. Curtis Crane assume this practice I value so highly. Please contact the office to learn more about Dr. Crane and to be provided contact information prior to his arrival at the end of the year. Dr. Crane will be in the area the first week in July, and again in late September, early October for those who wish to meet him and consult with him.

Frank Farewell Dear Friend (31 October 2010). And thank you to all patients and friends who have remembered him with fondness and appreciation this past year.

A graduate of the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, Dr. Brownstein received general surgery training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California and the University of New Mexico, followed by an additional two years of specialty training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. He is well published in his area of expertise including microsurgical, plastic and reconstructive surgery. mlb

Dr. Brownstein is a member of national plastic surgery organizations and societies including the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of WPATH (formerly HBIGDA) and has recently served a term on the Board of Directors, is Chairman of the Ethics Committee, and is a member of the Standards of Care Committee.

Surgery is performed at state of the art San Francisco surgical facilities and hospitals, assisted by staff familiar with the procedures and sensitive to the unique needs and concerns of his patients. Dr. Brownstein has outpatient and inpatient privileges at acute care hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dr. Brownstein frequently lectures at gender related conferences. While at these conferences, he routinely makes himself available for complimentary consultations to address your individual needs and suggest a surgical technique beneficial to conference attendees.
