Dr. Brownstein is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, and a member of ASPS, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, specializing in plastic, reconstructive and gender related surgery. Dr. Brownstein has performed gender related surgery since the late 1970's when, with the advice and support of Paul Walker, co-founder and President of the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association, HBIGDA, he received the first of his many referrals for bilateral breast reconstruction in transgendered males followed by genital surgery in transgendered males. After studying with Dr. J.J. Hage at the Free University in Amsterdam, he began performing SRS in transgendered females.

 


A graduate of the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, Dr. Brownstein received general surgery training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California and the University of New Mexico. After an additional two years of specialty training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, he began his practice in 1975. He is well published in his area of expertise including microsurgical, plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Brownstein is a member of many national plastic surgery organizations and societies to include the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of HBIGDA and currently serves as Chairman of the Ethics Committee.

Surgery is performed at a modern San Francisco surgical facility assisted by staff familiar with the procedures and sensitive to the unique needs and concerns of his patients. Dr. Brownstein also has privileges at several acute care hospitals in San Francisco.

Dr. Brownstein frequently lectures at gender related conferences. While at these conferences, he routinely makes himself available for complimentary consultations to address your individual needs and suggest a surgical technique beneficial to you.

Dr. Brownstein will be periodically presenting topics in surgery which may be of value to his current and prospective patients as they consider their surgical options and attempt to maximize the cosmetic and functional results of their surgery. He will endeavor to present a new topic on a bimonthly or quarterly basis.
