Personal accounts of Dr. Brownstein's Patients
There are a number of my patients who are willing
to communicate with prospective patients to relate their experiences
and try to allay the inevitable anxieties that are associated
with this surgery.

A Typical Surgical/Post-Surgical Experience
Directly Following Surgery
The staff at the surgery center will provide patients with all
needed post-surgical instructions prior to release from the center.
Typically, Dr. Brownstein will prescribe antibiotics and pain
medication that can be filled at a nearby pharmacy. It's important
that a friend or relative be present for the first 24 hours post-op.
After the first 24 hours, it is usually safe to spend time alone.
Each patient is different--some need more care and assistance,
while other seem to do quite well by themselves. Dr. Brownstein
usually follows up with patients every other day following surgery
until the patient leaves San Francisco.
The following is a typical trip to San Francisco:
Day 1 - Arrive in San Francisco.
Day 2 - Visit Dr. Brownstein for a pre-surgical appointment.
Day 3 - Surgery.
Day 5 - Dr. Brownstein changes the surgical dressings.
Day 7 - The drains are removed and the packing around
the nipples cut free.
Day 9 - The sutures are removed.
Day 10 - You can shower for the first time in a week!
Day 11 - A final visit before returning home. Dr. Brownstein
will instruct the patient as to the proper care of the nipple
grafts and incisions.
Day 12 - Return home.
Day 12 - 19 Continue to wear binder as Dr. Brownstein
prescribes.
Day 12 - ? Continue changing surgical dressings as Dr.
Brownstein prescribes.
To help make your stay most comfortable, some people have found
that "baby wipes" or other wet cleaning clothes help
them feel fresher during the period when showering is prohibited.
Many patients schedule their visit to San Francisco for 10 days
to 2 weeks in order to be recovered enough to return home. It's
advised to have a friend, spouse or family member accompanying
you to help with basic needs during the first few weeks as well
as to help with carrying luggage, etc on the return trip home.
